Don’t want to touch that hotel remote? The Ri Universal Remote has changed it all.

1 Comment 05 January 2012

We’ve all felt the hotel remote might be full of germs….now there’s an easy and cheap alternative. The Ri universal remote app and connector gives you another option.

Ri transforms your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad to a truly universal remote. You don’t need to worry about adapters or batteries as Ri plugs straight into the headset jack. All you need to do then is select the model from the list supplied, that’s it!

Your device will then work as a remote for all your entertainment (TV, DVD, Home theater, Audio devices), work (Mac, Projector) and in some cases it can control lighting. The application currently supports over 233 most popular brands, over 74 different device types and over 875 devices with users also invited to let th creaters know what they’re missing.

If you are planning to use the application for a specific device, don’t forget to check their list of supported brands and devices before purchasing the connector. The app is free.

Staff Travel Story – Sally Irons

No Comments 03 January 2012

Sportsnet’s Sally Irons tells us a little about Vietnam…

SN: What is your favourite place in the world that you’ve traveled to and why?

SI: Vietnam. I love the food, the simplicity of the culture, the organised chaos on the roads, the history and the fact people are so willing to share it with you. The hospitality, how complete strangers will invite you into their homes to share the very little they have with you, the smiling faces and gorgeous kids.

SN: What is your most vivid memory of Vietnam?

SI: Somehow I managed to arrive when the Rock Storm concert was taking place, a stadium jam packed with people watching and listening to Vietnam’s top rock acts. Even though I couldn’t understand a word that was being sung, it was amazing.

SN: What do you recommend is a MUST do for fellow travelers when visiting Vietnam?

SI: A personalised DMZ tour, you get the entire history of the Vietnam War and get to see old tanks used in the conflict, bomb shells, ruined buildings, the propaganda, and even walk part of the Ho Chi Minh trail.

Have you been to Vietnam? What’s your most vivid memory?

Who is Harry Hopman?

No Comments 30 December 2011

The Hopman Cup is named in Harry Hopman’s honour, but who is he?

Henry “Harry” Christian Hopman, was born in Glebe NSW in 1906 and was a world-acclaimed tennis player and coach. He played cricket and tennis at Parramatta High School and went on to become the highly successful captain/coach of 22 Australian Davis Cup teams between 1939 and 1967.

He won the Davis Cup an unmatched 16 times with players such as Frank Sedgman, Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, John Newcombe and Tony Roche, to name a few. When it looked like Frank Sedgman was going to turn professional in late 1951, Harry used his column in the Herald-Sun to run a fundraising campaign to try to keep Sedgman in the amateur ranks. Enough money was raised to buy a patrol station in the name of Sedgman’s fiance which allowed him to remain an amateur for another year. After World War II, Harry’s focus became journalism, mainly sporting commentary.

His first wife was Nell Hall, with whom he won four mixed doubles finals then in 1969 he emigrated to the United States and became a very successful professional coach at he Port Wachington Tennis Academy for future champions including John McEnroe. In 1978, Hopman was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
