Backpack or suitcase? That is the question!

No Comments 02 April 2012

This week we asked our amazing staff here at Sportsnet, when travelling do they choose to take a backpack or suitcase? Why?

Sarah – Suitcase – I would not feel comfortable with backpack although I have never tried

Ornella – Samsonite all the way!

Ian – Backpack……..easier to carry

Craig – I backpacked for 6 years. Whilst it was the time of my life I don’t intend strapping one on my back again. Suitcase for me

Adrian – Backpack definitely. Worry less with those baggage handlers!!

Daniel – I’m 35, suitcase!

Rebecca – Suitcase! Suitcase screams Holiday while backpack screams backpacker Hostels

David – Depends on the trip. If you’re planning on getting around via trains, buses etc then backpack it but if it’s a single destination or you’re flying everywhere, a suitcase is fine

Brooke – Depends where I’m going.  Backpack if I’m on and off trains etc.  Suitcase if I’m travelling in style

Amelia – Either.. depends on where you are going

Casey – A suitcase – i couldn’t fit enough into a backpack! But I will always pack an empty satchel or backpack in my luggage so that I can use it while I’m away and it doubles as hand luggage on the way home

Rob – Suitcase, my back-packing days are over!

Sue – Suitcase as it’s so much easier on your back, unless you are backpacking of course!!

What’s your preference? Backpack or suitcase and why?

Jungle Surfing? Yes please!

No Comments 22 March 2012

That’s right, Jungle Surfing! It’s an amazing and exhilarating way to see the breathtaking Daintree Rainforest. It’s not for the faint of heart but I’d say it’s well worth the adrenaline!

It essentially gives you access to the heart of the forest and has a low impact on the environment with it’s system of platforms and cables as you move about through the canopy.

They also have a team of tour guides, scientists and abseiling specialists to not only make your experience safe but to help you take away a new understanding and appreciation of the ecosystem that is the rainforest.

From humble beginnings selling tickets out of the Port Douglas Pharmacy for guided day and night walks through his private rainforest in Cape Tribulation, the creator of this amazing experience, Stephen Walsh, also received clearance from elders of the Kuku Yalanji. The brilliant thing is that they have come up with an ingenious system that holds the platforms to the trees without a single nail or bolt penetrating them.

The tour takes approximately 2 hours with a bit over half of that being up in the treetops and it’s an activity that the whole family can enjoy together with no specific fitness requirements as the guides control your flight. Unfortunately, it’s not for pregnant women and do make sure you contact before booking if you have any specific medical conditions.

Oh to be surrounded by that beautiful rainforest! It’s a must do.

What’s the worst in-flight movie you’ve ever seen?

No Comments 19 March 2012

To start the week off, we asked the awesome staff here at Sportsnet to tell us:

What’s the worst in-flight movie you’ve ever seen?

Sara
– I cannot remember it was that bad!

Ornella - Source Code

Ian - Anything with Vince Vaughan

Craig - I dont watch them, usually listen to music

Adrian – Have never had a terrible one believe it or not…have been lucky in my selections. Prefer to read.

Daniel – Not sure however Die Hard 2 or Passenger 57 would both be inappropriate.

Rebecca – Mostly all of them.

David - Don’t recall but I suspect I would have simply fallen asleep if it were that bad! I do remember on a flight from Singapore to Bangkok I couldn’t find one movie I wanted to watch from a brand-new on-demand flight system – incredibly frustrating!

Brooke – None that I can think of…. I remember watching Pursuit of Happyness though and myself and my mate Corey were bawling like babies… probably more embarrassing for him but still – that really was a red-eye flight!

Amelia – Killers- Ashton Kutcher… it was quite lame…

Casey – I don’t think I’ve ever watched a movie the whole way through on a flight. I’m possibly the worst channel flicker you’ll ever meet.

Rob – Batman & Robin

Sue – Bridesmaids

What’s the worst in-flight movie you’ve ever seen?

The Isle of Man TT…in 3D!

No Comments 15 March 2012

Sportsnet was lucky enough to watch the absolutely AMAZING documentary on the Isle of Man – TT3D: Closer to the Edge – over the weekend. Even WE have a new appreciation for this truly unique and historic race meet!

TT3D: Closer to the Edge is the first feature-length sports documentary to be filmed in full 3D. The race celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2011 and the new doco will be special not only for motorcycle fans but for film buffs too. It’s narrated by actor and musician Jared Leto and charts the world-famous Isle of Man TT motorcycle race that takes place on the Isle of Man every year, and follows the leading riders in the 2010 race, most notably Guy Martin and Ian Hutchinson.

It charts the racers’ reckless dedication and the extreme risks involved in their bid to win. The film documents the build-up to the 2010 races and each race and their results, beautifully capturing the speed, drama and adrenaline.

The TT has always called for a commitment far beyond any other racing event with over 200 people having made the ultimate sacrifice in their quest for victory since the race began.

The second half of the film introduces Bridget Dobbs, mother of two and widow of Paul Dobbs (“Dobsy”) who died in the 2010 races. She accepts that her husband died doing what he loved the most in life.

This is history in the making and the first sports documentary to be made in 3D.
Whether you’re a bike racing fan or not, check it out.
