NRL…you’ve won me over!

1 Comment 06 October 2011

It was hard to believe we were heading into Australia’s most populated city on NRL Grand Final day when we left Mascot airport after a ridiculously early flight on Sunday morning. Anyone else get caught out by Daylight Savings??? (thank you i-Phone!) The streets were empty, rain was coming down and as we hit the CBD I seriously expected to see tumbleweed rolling down Pitt St as we pulled up to our hotel.

Squared away it was time to go and set-up our function at the Menzies. What an event this promised to be. Benny Elias, Billy Moore (daylight savings victim!), comedian Clint Paddison and 150 Sportsnet guests having a few drinks, a great lunch and getting into the spirit of the game. It was a great function. Benny and Billy were hilarious, almost as funny as Clint and when they knuckled down to talk about the impending Manly v Warriors clash that you could feel the excitement building in the room. After the function it was a train to the game. Now – we left at 3.30pm to head to the ground and courtesy of free transport for all ticket holders on the day, we were at Olympic Park by 4pm. Brilliant. Easy. Just what’s needed for all visiting fans and most appreciated. Well done NRL. Well done Sydney!

All creatures great & small...

Arriving at ANZ Stadium the noise and the hype was getting close to fever pitch. Fans from both sides singing and carrying on, and crazy costumes and get-ups could be seen everywhere! Over an hour before kick off and the place was absolutely humming. As a predominantly AFL fan, I can tell you there’s a lot the AFL could learn about Grand Final day (granted that would be about it but still…) from the NRL. The bars were exceptional and fast moving. The food, the same. There just seemed to be a lot of space in the concourses and it was so incredibly well organized. You never had to wait for anything! Cue entertainment. Where Meatloaf failed to fire at the G, Clarkson, Eskimo Joe etc nailed ANZ complemented by fireworks, dancers and so much more. Kudos once more NRL.

What a view!

So we hit our seats. Perfect! Try line, section 1, in a melting pot of Sea Eagle and Warrior fans. It was raining, but somehow we managed to be 3 rows back from where the rain stopped…luck or perfect management? Of huge benefit to me was the man-by-man intros of the players on the big screen. Loved it and man did it get the crowd going?! For me, well it made the players ‘real’ people and when they ran out to even more fireworks, I kind of felt like I knew them! Then it got serious…and how!

There was a lot of talk about whether the NZ national anthem would be played, or if the Haka should be performed. I mean, it IS an Aussie comp after all with the Warriors going further than anyone thought possible. To my extreme pleasure, both happened. The anthems of both countries were fantastic, and I think everyone was singing along. But the Haka…well well. THIS is something extraordinary. Though I’m sure they were freezing in their native costumes, the Maoris in on the ground gave it everything, I could her something behind me and when I turned in my seat, I saw these Warrior fans helping out doing the Haka too! (anyone else see these guys??)

There were goose-bumps the size of golf balls all over me, and you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. The pride, the patriotism, the passion. THAT is what sport is about, what Sportsnet want all our clients to experience, and here I was, EXPERIENCING IT!! Right there I decided I was a Warrior fan for the day and no matter what happened in the next 80 minutes or so, they’ll have a special place in my heart due wholly to the passion of their fans.

The game itself was OK…A battle of defences and Manly were just too experienced, too structured for the most part. In the last 20 minutes the Warriors found the flair that had got them this far but the clock, steady rain and an oppressing Sea Eagles outfit all conspired against them to see Manly win convincingly in the season decider. There was also talk of some dubious refereeing decisions; can anyone enlighten me as to what these were? I saw unbridled joy, and open heartache. As a true fan of neither team I was simply honoured to be there and to see how a game that has had so many off field issues in 2011 put it all on the line for the big one. As far as I am concerned, they got it bang on! I’ll be back for sure, mind you I’ll head over on Saturday night next time…

Who else was there? How would you rate your experience at this magnificent event and will you be back? I know I will. Get in early here and join me!

NRL Grand Final & you have to love the Warriors…AND their fans!

No Comments 26 September 2011

OK so I’m a little disappointed that the Melbourne Storm will NOT be in the 2011 Telstra NRL Grand Final. I’m already going to the match no matter what thanks to Sportsnet Holidays and looking forward to it immensely. However now as an impartial fan I think as much of my excitement will be brought about by the incredible number of Kiwis travelling over to support their heroes, the New Zealand Warriors. And rest assured, they are travelling in the thousands this weekend!

It’s been 9 years since the Warriors have been to the ‘big dance’ and given their form in 2011, my tip is they may in fact go one better when they face off against Manly on Sunday. The passion of the small number of supporters at AAMI Park on Saturday was palpable and I can only imagine what it’s going to be like at ANZ on Sunday. It’s a perfect excuse for the fans to come over to Sydney and experience one of the biggest weekends in Australian sport. The biggest question is…’Can Sydney handle them?’

Unbeatable atmosphere!

The fans are loud, proud, massive (what do they FEED the boys in NZ?!?!) and carrying with them the expectation of a country tiny in size but HUGE in heart and rugby league history. With the domestic focus on the Rugby World Cup, I’m thinking that these committed Warriors fans will be chomping at the bit to get out of NZ and head over asap!

Hotels are filling up fast, tickets are pretty much sold out on Ticketek (Category 1 anyhow) and there’s no reason to think that ANZ will not be filled to capacity of around 82,000 people. I would LOVE to see around ¼ of that crowd shouting for the Warriors but fear that ticket availability will be a huge problem. We still have limited numbers left at Sportsnet Holidays but not sure how many the NRL will give to the Warriors? Does anyone know?

I'm on the Warriors bandwagon!!!

Here’s my prediction. The Warriors after a slow start will come back and overtake the Sea Eagles with James Maloney scoring the final try and conversion of the game to secure the first premiership for a non-Aussie side. Good for the game? Hell yes! Nothing better than winning a cup BACK from over the ditch. Good for Sunday…ABSOLUTELY! Until you’ve seen it, you can’t appreciate the feeling and emotion of these Warriors fans and I for one can’t wait to experience it again, this time with the Premiership Trophy at stake!

I might even need to buy a Warriors jersey and become an honorary supporter for the night…is that acceptable? One thing is for certain, I’d be amongst the rowdiest, most passionate minority I think will have ever set foot in ANZ Stadium for the big one.

Who’s going to be there? Manly fans are you worried? Can anyone stop Vatuvei?  Will Stewart step up on the biggest stage of all? Who WILL walk away with the NRL Trophy as champions of 2011? Less than a week till these questions are answered but I’m curious…what do YOU think?

Stay tuned for video, pics and Blog Monday the 3rd after a HUGE day at ANZ! Till then…

Hei konei ra (did I get that right??)

Can Origin save the NRL?

Can Origin save the NRL?

No Comments 11 May 2011

Since 1982, State of Origin rugby league has been the pinnacle and envy of the rugby league world. Arguably the toughest matches in the toughest domestic competition in the world, the annual State of Origin now sits firmly atop the tree in the world of Rugby League. And the 2011 series could not have come at a better time for the game.

With controversy never far away at the best of times, the NRL has copped more than its fair share of hits this year. With players frequently showing less intelligence and respect than their pay packets (you would think) should require towards the game that affords them a magnificent lifestyle, and the fans that hold them in the highest of high regards, it’s been a tough season for David Gallop and his team.

Can the State of Origin series stop the slide and force the focus back onto the tough, uncompromising and skilful aspects of the game that we all know and love? I hope so. To open the papers lately and see more actual football news than scandal has been a refreshing change. To sit around the drip-tray debating the potential ins-and-outs, comparing lifetime Origin highlights and usually ending up in a heated argument between mates (requiring embarrassed apology emails the next day) is what I call football bliss.

More than anything though, the fact that every football fan regardless of which team they follow goes nuts for Origin makes me smile and think that the game is safe. The question is… “How can we instil the respect, passion, commitment, desire and class to the regular season that is clearly evident in State of Origin?” If I was lucky enough or good enough to be playing at the top level, I would treat every game as my last and every move I make off-field with the appropriate care demanded of role models these days. Wouldn’t you?

All I can say is bring it on game 1. We’ll be heading up to QLD with Sportsnet Holidays and Total Sports Travel for BOTH Brissy games and cannot wait. Functions with Andy Gee and Gordon Tallis, free beers, it doesn’t get much better than that!!! I won’t tell you who I support right now but would love to hear some of the passion in your comments to this post…or if you think you know how we can keep the sport, and players on track, PLEASE contribute. Let’s give Gallop et al some ideas!!!

Ayres to target NRL players

No Comments 28 April 2010

By Brent Diamond

FORMER Geelong and Adelaide coach Gary Ayres says he will target Melbourne Storm players over the pre-season as recruits in the VFL and will question whether they want to be a part of the embattled club after last week’s salary breach upheaval.

Ayres has suggested that it will become a growing trend after former NRL star Karmichael Hunt’s transition to new AFL franchise, the Gold Coast.

“With the success the Melbourne Storm had, it’s going to put a lot of questions out there because of the situation they find themselves in and then the players will think do I have to look at another alternative or am I wanting to give that a go,” Ayres said.
