The Full Melbourne Cup Experience – Better than a Box Trifecta

Submitted by Sportsnet Roving Reporter JayLo

A highlight-moment of my Cup-day happened surprisingly early, at 6.45am in fact, when my cabbie picked me up from home… in my heels, fascinator and all. He asked me how my night was, as if I was making my way home from a Cup-Eve bender (??!!!!). Okay…. not ‘exactly’ the so-hot-right-now look I was going for, but I think he can be forgiven based on the fact I was one of the earliest-prepared women in Melbourne for the Cup. It all made a little more sense to him when we swung by to pick up my equally prepared friend Kim (who needed me to stab 6 bobby pins into her fascinator and scalp before we left… I think it gave her an unexpected & welcome mini face-lift at 7am!) – and off we went, all the way through to the Crown Palladium valet drive – to meet our fellow-frocked early-birds! Honestly we felt like we were in that commercial for Crown stepping our high heels out of the taxi, past Prada, and up the steps to the grand entrance. Ha!

Frock Watching

Roving Reporter JayLo (right) and Kim

Walking into the Crown Palladium lobby we were stunned by a sea of feathers and block-colouring… fresh foundations, wedge-heels… clutches, perfumes and champagne  – oh my! The crowd at the SportsetHolidays annual breakfast were up & about in a big way for 7.30am…. the room’s conversation hum (from the hundreds of guests) was intermittently pierced with squeals, giggles and enthused stories of Cup-days gone by. Walking the lobby was simply surreal… summing people’s smiles and outfits up as quickly as they were summing mine. We were all winning (luckily)… the ‘people watching’ on a day like Melbourne Cup at a venue like Crown Palladium is simply worlds-best.

The excitement when the doors were opened to the Palladium room was almost as if the gates had just opened for the horses at the track! “…And they’re off!” What a spectacular scene. Melbourne may be known for its hole-in-the-wall alleyway breakfast cafe’s… but the grandeur of a Cup Day breakfast with 500 giddy guests is just something else. Once the our MC got started we quickly realised we were one of a very few Melbourne locals in the room…. and let me tell you, there’s something extra special about a room filled with fellow-aussies who have travelled from interstate on a journey to the nations sporting capital on the same dream… to back the winner of The Cup!

After some brilliant food and guest speakers (including Dr. Turf, racecaller extraordinaire, and Ray Selkrig, winning jockey of the Melbourne Cup 50 years ago) I was excited to hear Rob Cecconi (Sportsnet Holidays founder) launch the Sportsnet Foundation helping bring opportunities to children… keeping them on the right track, a great concept we were all happy hear about and support.

Fashions Off the Field

It wasn’t long before we started one of the highlights of the morning…. ‘Fashions Off the Field’ – a spectacular show of 15 breakfast guests in their race-day best (including me and Kim!). This was a fun-filled show hosted by the renowned fashionista Bec Maddern… I was SO nervous about walking a catwalk runway right down the middle of the Palladium room but Bec and the other contestants made it so much fun – a very tongue in cheek approach as you’ll see in the video (you might recognise my ‘blue steel’ look at the start of my walk … a guaranteed show stopper). It was brilliant to have an opportunity to win prizes including a hotel experience at Crown and a gorgeous Opal from Lightning Ridge Opal Mines… Kim was lucky enough to come second place (based on the trusty audience applause voting system). I told her it was the bobby pin face-lift id given her… so I’m pretty confident I’ll be her plus one when she claims her prize at Crown!

.

And they’re off!

Before we knew it the entire room of guests were all escorted out to the coaches and were making our way to Flemington – happy to be seated behind a gorgeous couple who had just won a trip to Fiji at the breakfast (I think they phoned every person in their address book to share the news of their big win… without even placing a bet on a single horse!). Our full bus was absolutely buzzing with excitement and why not – when we parked our coach among hundreds of others and made our way towards the Flemington gates the feeling was just surreal – welcome to history in the making. Smile, you’re on camera. I even noticed our female bus-driver doing a quick change out of her uniform and into a frock and hat for the day (no-one misses this race… for anything). Classic.

.

So the excitement within the gates is just next level… bookies, hot chips, champagne, dress ups, glamazons, fashion fails – something to see in absolutely every direction. From the Navy seals to the Buck’s party (men in animal print suits, see pic)… and the dress-up jockey’s to the girls in business shirts and, well, not much else – the fashion fabs and fails were like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Jaw dropped non-stop.

Now they tell me it’s mainly about the horses but – as far as I could tell – the Melbourne Cup is about likeminded people getting together to have a good punt and a great time …. So many smiles and laughs, it’s like it’s everyone’s birthday party all at once!  The airing of the race-horn had an old-school excitement about it…. then there were a few screams and hugs throughout the day on big wins – but the main race made this a ‘day for the bookies’ with the favourite nowhere to be seen (that damn omen bet on Americain… more like Amercan’t).

Regardless of not winning thousands of dollars the day just gets better and better as the hours roll by unexpectedly quickly… a concentration of so many people having the time of their lives in one spot on the planet at one time – wow, what a sight…

My first Melbourne Cup experience of many… I can’t believe it took me 28 years to get there in the flesh but I’ll say one thing for sure… see you on the rails at Flemington in 2012!

If it were up to me, we’d all fly this way!

Working for Sportsnet Holidays I get the chance as part of hosting our awesome tours, to fly a LOT both domestically and internationally. Everything from A380’s to Saab340’s, to places like South Africa, Turkey, NZ, Malaysia and every city/regional port in Australia. Yes…mainly in economy with the occasional upgrade to business or ‘premium economy’, but only if I’m extremely lucky. It doesn’t bother me too much anyway. So long as I get an aisle seat.

Recently though, my lovely fiancé Jody and perfect 3 month old daughter Grace joined me on a flight to KL for work. It was great to have them with me but also made me think…”What’s really important on a flight…to me?” I came up with the following 3 key areas I look for;

1)   Leg room and realistic chance of sleep

2)   If I’m in the mood, can I get a drink…or several for those LONG hauls?

3)   Quality of food on board

I started looking into these key areas and found some pretty interesting innovations that airlines are incorporating to make travel more pleasant and actually fun. Let’s go in order shall we?

Leg Room & Chance to Sleep

Surfing the net and chatting to people in the industry all roads lead to one place. Singapore Airlines. These guys have gone over the top and I love it! For just shy of AUD30,000 the three of us could fly Sydney to Heathrow in one of the relatively new Singapore Airline Suites. You have to see these things to believe them!

Designed by some famous French yacht interior designer these fully enclosed ‘rooms’ incorporate walls, a door, a 200cm bed (double if you’re in the centre of the cabin) that is NOT a converted seat, 23” LCD TV, and a foldout table able to accommodate 2 meals form the incredible kitchen on board. With service to match, is there a better way to fly? The experts say NO! Rated as the number 1 First Class option on the planet by SkyTrax this is something that I have scratched into my Bucket List as a must do…is it worth the AUD25,000 price hike from economy? Well if you’ve got it, absolutely. Cuddling at 32,000 feet with my girls instead of the cramped confines of Y Class for 21 hours? You can’t beat that.

Can I get a drink?

OK. So maybe this would be more relevant when travelling alone but nobody has ever accused Jody of shying away from a Champagne or three. Enter Virgin Atlantic. In ‘Upper Class’ aboard their beautiful new A380’s, Virgin passengers can whittle away the hours in a more social and relaxed environment than any other airline. A central bar with seating and bartender is available upon reaching cruising altitude.

The Virgin Bar - 21 hours? Boony your record is in danger!

I could see all three of us propping the bar up (though Grace may be restricted to formula) for a good portion of the flight. Hopefully we would meet some interesting people, have a chat, a few laughs, and before we knew it the pilot would be announcing our decent into London. Does it get much better?

Oh, let’s look at price. For the privilege, and of course much nicer digs, Mr Branson will collect a total of AUD15,600 from the three of us as opposed to the economy fare of AUD4,400 Sydney-Heathrow. Worth it? If it makes the flight pass by in the blink of an eye…absolutely!

Food

Last but by no means least. The meals for too long have been purely sustenance to me, something to ensure that I don’t fade away to a shadow on the flight. I guess I just assumed it’s too hard to make it much more. Singapore have introduced a feature that allows you to pre-order a meal from one of their selected chefs, which is pretty cool but it’s still pre-packaged right?

What grabbed me most recently however was an innovation from Cathay Pacific which alleviates any doubt on the freshness of their offerings…in Business Class anyhow.

Fresh is indeed best! Thanks Cathay.

Rice cookers, toasters, stove tops and skillets replace heat boxes as Cathay strive to provide the freshest of fresh airline food. Granted, the smell of the food may indeed spread through the cabin, but at least you know it’s been prepared on site, fresh, and you have a chance to let the chef know how you want YOUR beef (or whatever) cooked! It’s all part of the service in business with Cathay and we’re looking at AUD26,440 for the three of us. If we were to choose slightly more dodgy pre packaged and reheated food, less room and service, Sydney to Heathrow will cost us AUD5,006.

So there you have it. My 3 boxes ticked…and how! Sure I may not have the chance to experience these things first hand, but they’re on my list now and should 6 lucky numbers pop up on lotto night, look out! I’ll try all 3! Either way, it’s great to see airlines constantly looking for better ways to do things, to make us more comfortable, and to offer the best experience possible.

What experiences have you had? Is there anything you look for that differs from these 3 points? I’d love to hear from anyone who’s actually done any of the above!

TWO HOLIDAYS IN ONE! BRING ON THE SYDNEY V8′S

No Comments 02 November 2011

It’s been some kind of year in the V8 Supercar Championship Series and again it looks like the title could be decided in the very last round, the Sydney Telstra 500 at Homebush in December. Of course we’ll be there with Sportsnet, but it forced me to think back to the 2010 Homebush V8 event and I remembered how there was a unique feel to the whole Sydney V8 experience. I’ll try to explain.

Sydney of course is one of Australia’s premiere tourist destinations with 9.7 million visitors from both overseas and domestic ports popping in last financial year. With this in mind I was still surprised with how ‘normal’ things were in the CBD, The Rocks, Kings Cross and Circular Quay. There was hardly any indication at all that the V8’s were even happening. Having been to Clipsal, Bathurst, Townsville and Hidden Valley where it’s ALL about the race, it was somewhat refreshing. I’ll explain.

Homebush was V8 heaven. New track, extraordinary garages (actually IN a pavilion), brilliant grandstands and a ‘Merchandise Alley’ to die for. It was jam packed with hardcore V8 fans and the smell, noise and excitement rivaled any V8 event on the calendar. We even got to see James Courtney wrap up his title on the Sunday and celebrate in style! I loved it!

Flipside. Sydney was Sydney and it needn’t be anything more. We still climbed the Bridge, did breakfast at Bondi (via Harley no less!), flew past the Opera House and under the Bridge on insane Jet-Boats and enjoyed some of the finest cuisine and beverages that Sydney has to offer. It felt like another world. It felt like another holiday altogether!

Off to Bondi for brekkie!

Some of the people in our group weren’t total V8 enthusiasts so this unique combination of destination based attractions unaffected by the race – and the hardcore V8 action at Homebush was, for them, just what the doctor ordered. For myself, and the other full-on V8 fans, it was actually really cool to see more than the track, your hotel and the inside of every bar in the hosting destination for a change.

Tranquil start to V8 race day. Nice!

It may have been proximity. Homebush IS 40 minutes from the CBD. It might have been the sheer size of the city and her population. Or it may simply have been that there is so so much to do in the Harbour City. Whatever the reason, it was refreshing to everyone no matter WHAT they were looking for. It felt like I got 2 brilliant experiences for the price of 1. All I can say is bring it on for 2011 man…I’m already working on how I can fit everything into 5 days. This is going to be awesome.

Good fortune or good management? Who cares, the Wallabies are in the RWC Semis!

Woah man! Talk about get-out-of-jail-free cards! I reckon our Wallabies used every last credit they had with the football gods to get over the line in an uninspiring Quarter Final clash with the Springboks. Pretty crappy game to watch but hey, if France can turn it on in the Quarters, what’s to say we can’t turn it on in the Semis, or even the big one? What could possibly go wrong?

Well…there IS the fact we haven’t won against the All Blacks in over 20 years at Eden Park. That sucks. They have the home crowd. Ditto. The All Blacks are in pretty good form. Strike 3! As a glass half full kind of guy though, I like to look at what could possibly go RIGHT.

How about the passion of the Aussie fan? That has to be a plus. Imagine being out there, looking up into the stands and seeing gold jerseys standing out like a beacon against the sea of black shirts. That’s what our players need, to know we’re behind them all the way, that we scrambled and hunted down the best tickets available, laid down our hard-earned and made the trip to collectively be their ‘16th man’.

Then there’s the Aussie spirit. When was the last time a Wallaby team laid down? Umm…NEVER!!! We know how to win World Cups. New Zealand are the specialists at falling in over one of the final hurdles and I reckon we can ensure it’s this one. What do you think?

Either way, we’ll be proud of our boys. Injury ravaged they’ve managed to beat the odds and get this far, it’s what dreams are made of right? Last post I mentioned that if we got over the line against South Africa, my mates would be headed over for the Semis no matter WHOM we played. Like me, they’d come back hoarse whether the Wallabies played the All Blacks, or Tibet! And thank god Total Sports Travel have come up with these incredible deals. I know, I work in the industry but even for me, this is red hot.

Official tickets, chartered flight (are you KIDDING ME??) and transfers to /from Eden Park for $1,495?? This, my friends is the deal of a lifetime. My guys are all over it like a rash so keep an eye out for them but if you want to be part of this ridiculous package, speak to the guys at Total Sports Travel TODAY! A plane only has so many seats right? Me? I can’t make it sadly but I know the boys will be flying the flag with pride and I cannot wait to hear their tales when they return. If you end up joining them, I’d love to hear your stories too!
