Graduation Day – Making it all the way to the Melbourne Cup at Flemington

1 Comment 27 October 2011

by Sportsnet’s Roving Reporter – JayLo

I'm ready...but is Flemington ready for me???

I’m almost as embarrassed as I am excited to say I’ve been living in Melbourne for my entire, 28 year-long, life and have never attended the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse. I’ve been to many other race days over the years, Derby, Oaks, Stakes – but never the jewel in the racing crown. The Cup itself It’s just so big, so important that I never thought I belonged there… not being a ‘thoroughbred’ race-goer throughout the year – The Cup seemed like it was reserved for the biggest enthusiasts of all, I didn’t deserve a place. But THIS year, I’ve earned my stripes. I’ve done my time at Caulfield, and Bendigo Cup – and I backed the winner of last years’ Melbourne Cup pocketing a sweet $500 on Americain (thanks to my mum being US born, love a good ‘omen’ bet)… so I deserve my place at the track for this year’s Cup. I’ve RSVP’d ‘no’ to 3 different BBQ Melbourne Cup invitations (… sorry guys, I’m going to be watching history in the making in person this year).

Since I decided to attend the biggest race day of the year – I involuntarily, indirectly also entered into weeks of deliberation and weather watching on the outfit, shoes and headpiece of choice. Should it be a feathery hat or a weather-proof hat? Should it be the in-season heels or the pumps that won’t sink into the grass turf? Should I ask my friends for their opinion on Facebook or trust my own gut. There’s no doubt that, as a twenty-something chick, around 15,000 people at the track will give me a quick once-over and offer a rate in their mind out of ten (… must get to yoga tonight) – but that’s all part of the excitement… must nail the preparation (repeat, and repeat again)!

So, here we are, the week leading up to The Cup is unreal – I’m hearing odds broadcast on every media imaginable… I’m hearing reports of horses arriving from around the world and there is a fever in the air. Even the weather-man knows how important this is to me by giving me my own Cup Day prediction. Yesterday I even heard a lady at Coles ask her more informed bloke “what do you mean Black Caviar isn’t in The Cup?”…. sprinter not a stayer apparently (?) – whatever… this is going to be Amazing.

Oh, it’s ON.

My first AFL Grand Final – How it all panned out!

No Comments 14 October 2011

The Grand Final Parade was a perfect way to get into the spirit of the whole event – especially for someone who is a fair-weather supporter at best. I was born into a life of being a Carlton supporter and it’s an indoctrination that has a depth I only just realised last week when I decided I might change AFL teams. As I started weighing up the pros and cons of all the teams and had them all up for grabs in my brain I just couldn’t do it. I FEEL like a Blues supporter! It’s in me. As part of the Sportsnet special package to the AFL Grand Final, an exclusive event overlooking the parade is included. It was in the Martini Bar which is part of the Westin hotel and is PERFECTLY situated overlooking the corner of Swanston and Collins Streets- exactly in the path of the parade. Miraculously, after a very wet week (one day being the wettest in 56 years), the heavens CLOSED for the exact 2hr parade timeframe and tens of thousands of fans lined the Melbourne City streets to join in.

Me & Brad. That smile IS for real everyone!

We could weave our way down to the street any time we wanted, but the view from the balcony of the Martini bar was truly the best vantage point – not JUST because of the gorgeous food and endless drinks served by the super delightful staff.

Awesome view from Westin's Martini Bar

Sportsnet had arranged for Brad Johnson and Jason Johnson to join us and we had a chance to have a chat to them about being an AFL star and some of the questions from the crowd were hilarious!

Footy fans are certainly not shy of a bit of heckling of each other are they? People breaking out into debates about the good-lookingness (or not) of ‘ranga’ Cameron Ling. Cats fans ribbing Pies fans about an emotional Mick Malthouse….. I had a great chat to a few groups of people at the event – all who’d flown in from different locations to have an AFL experience. They were all completely over the moon that they had a few experiences lined up like a night at Moonee Valley (sorry guys – I did appreciate the earnest invitation but I couldn’t get there!), an official footy-club breakfast, shopping. One family were even here to tick off the Dad’s next bucket-list item (a grand final). They said they’d be back for a Bathurst experience and also the Gallipoli one.

Walking back to the car there was a real peace and happiness in the streets of Melbourne. The next day was gloomy and dark but some of us gals see that as a great opportunity to wear boots and a couple more layers than usual – a real Melbourne experience! As I’d mentioned in my last blog post, my father had insisted that I make sure I focus on the first bounce and completely soak that moment up so I did…… There was a countdown timer on the big screen … counting down to the first bounce. 5….4…. at this stage the crowd became completely animated, the roar was electric and friendly and excited and very very deep! 3….2….. the exhilaration reached its peak and as the countdown timer reached 1 the crowd went completely silent. The ball was bounced and the crowd roared again – this time it was a roar that did not stop for the whole game. It was awesome to have seats undercover because the weather was gloomy. The fantastic thing, though, is that you can go for a wander around the stadium and even walk right down to the very front row of seats to see if there are any free. We did this and had a great 2nd row vantage point for about 10 minutes before the seats were reclaimed by their owners!!

As a Carlton supporter, I was certainly filled with Glee to see Collingwood lose to Geelong and I hope I can do it all again next year with my Blue Boys winning the flag.

Good fortune or good management? Who cares, the Wallabies are in the RWC Semis!

Woah man! Talk about get-out-of-jail-free cards! I reckon our Wallabies used every last credit they had with the football gods to get over the line in an uninspiring Quarter Final clash with the Springboks. Pretty crappy game to watch but hey, if France can turn it on in the Quarters, what’s to say we can’t turn it on in the Semis, or even the big one? What could possibly go wrong?

Well…there IS the fact we haven’t won against the All Blacks in over 20 years at Eden Park. That sucks. They have the home crowd. Ditto. The All Blacks are in pretty good form. Strike 3! As a glass half full kind of guy though, I like to look at what could possibly go RIGHT.

How about the passion of the Aussie fan? That has to be a plus. Imagine being out there, looking up into the stands and seeing gold jerseys standing out like a beacon against the sea of black shirts. That’s what our players need, to know we’re behind them all the way, that we scrambled and hunted down the best tickets available, laid down our hard-earned and made the trip to collectively be their ‘16th man’.

Then there’s the Aussie spirit. When was the last time a Wallaby team laid down? Umm…NEVER!!! We know how to win World Cups. New Zealand are the specialists at falling in over one of the final hurdles and I reckon we can ensure it’s this one. What do you think?

Either way, we’ll be proud of our boys. Injury ravaged they’ve managed to beat the odds and get this far, it’s what dreams are made of right? Last post I mentioned that if we got over the line against South Africa, my mates would be headed over for the Semis no matter WHOM we played. Like me, they’d come back hoarse whether the Wallabies played the All Blacks, or Tibet! And thank god Total Sports Travel have come up with these incredible deals. I know, I work in the industry but even for me, this is red hot.

Official tickets, chartered flight (are you KIDDING ME??) and transfers to /from Eden Park for $1,495?? This, my friends is the deal of a lifetime. My guys are all over it like a rash so keep an eye out for them but if you want to be part of this ridiculous package, speak to the guys at Total Sports Travel TODAY! A plane only has so many seats right? Me? I can’t make it sadly but I know the boys will be flying the flag with pride and I cannot wait to hear their tales when they return. If you end up joining them, I’d love to hear your stories too!

NRL…you’ve won me over!

It was hard to believe we were heading into Australia’s most populated city on NRL Grand Final day when we left Mascot airport after a ridiculously early flight on Sunday morning. Anyone else get caught out by Daylight Savings??? (thank you i-Phone!) The streets were empty, rain was coming down and as we hit the CBD I seriously expected to see tumbleweed rolling down Pitt St as we pulled up to our hotel.

Squared away it was time to go and set-up our function at the Menzies. What an event this promised to be. Benny Elias, Billy Moore (daylight savings victim!), comedian Clint Paddison and 150 Sportsnet guests having a few drinks, a great lunch and getting into the spirit of the game. It was a great function. Benny and Billy were hilarious, almost as funny as Clint and when they knuckled down to talk about the impending Manly v Warriors clash that you could feel the excitement building in the room. After the function it was a train to the game. Now – we left at 3.30pm to head to the ground and courtesy of free transport for all ticket holders on the day, we were at Olympic Park by 4pm. Brilliant. Easy. Just what’s needed for all visiting fans and most appreciated. Well done NRL. Well done Sydney!

All creatures great & small...

Arriving at ANZ Stadium the noise and the hype was getting close to fever pitch. Fans from both sides singing and carrying on, and crazy costumes and get-ups could be seen everywhere! Over an hour before kick off and the place was absolutely humming. As a predominantly AFL fan, I can tell you there’s a lot the AFL could learn about Grand Final day (granted that would be about it but still…) from the NRL. The bars were exceptional and fast moving. The food, the same. There just seemed to be a lot of space in the concourses and it was so incredibly well organized. You never had to wait for anything! Cue entertainment. Where Meatloaf failed to fire at the G, Clarkson, Eskimo Joe etc nailed ANZ complemented by fireworks, dancers and so much more. Kudos once more NRL.

What a view!

So we hit our seats. Perfect! Try line, section 1, in a melting pot of Sea Eagle and Warrior fans. It was raining, but somehow we managed to be 3 rows back from where the rain stopped…luck or perfect management? Of huge benefit to me was the man-by-man intros of the players on the big screen. Loved it and man did it get the crowd going?! For me, well it made the players ‘real’ people and when they ran out to even more fireworks, I kind of felt like I knew them! Then it got serious…and how!

There was a lot of talk about whether the NZ national anthem would be played, or if the Haka should be performed. I mean, it IS an Aussie comp after all with the Warriors going further than anyone thought possible. To my extreme pleasure, both happened. The anthems of both countries were fantastic, and I think everyone was singing along. But the Haka…well well. THIS is something extraordinary. Though I’m sure they were freezing in their native costumes, the Maoris in on the ground gave it everything, I could her something behind me and when I turned in my seat, I saw these Warrior fans helping out doing the Haka too! (anyone else see these guys??)

There were goose-bumps the size of golf balls all over me, and you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. The pride, the patriotism, the passion. THAT is what sport is about, what Sportsnet want all our clients to experience, and here I was, EXPERIENCING IT!! Right there I decided I was a Warrior fan for the day and no matter what happened in the next 80 minutes or so, they’ll have a special place in my heart due wholly to the passion of their fans.

The game itself was OK…A battle of defences and Manly were just too experienced, too structured for the most part. In the last 20 minutes the Warriors found the flair that had got them this far but the clock, steady rain and an oppressing Sea Eagles outfit all conspired against them to see Manly win convincingly in the season decider. There was also talk of some dubious refereeing decisions; can anyone enlighten me as to what these were? I saw unbridled joy, and open heartache. As a true fan of neither team I was simply honoured to be there and to see how a game that has had so many off field issues in 2011 put it all on the line for the big one. As far as I am concerned, they got it bang on! I’ll be back for sure, mind you I’ll head over on Saturday night next time…

Who else was there? How would you rate your experience at this magnificent event and will you be back? I know I will. Get in early here and join me!
