A big year of netball ahead

Comments Off 27 October 2010

Mo'onia Gerrard gives it her allWe cannot wait for the 2011 ANZ Championship series to kick off next February. For an Adelaide boy, it’s hardly surprising that I was cheering on Mon Gerrard and the Adelaide Thunderbirds to a devastating Grand Final win in 2010 over the WBOP Magic. The trans-Tasman netball series is gaining both respect and popularity year on year and the Australian Diamonds’ unexpected loss in the Delhi Commonwealth Games to bitter rivals the New Zealand Silver Ferns will spark an intensity from the first centre-pass in 2011. Can Adelaide do it again, will Corletto, MacMahon and their Melbourne Vixens re-establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with, or will the Magic go one better and take the title in 2011? Strap yourselves in, this is going to be one hell of a ride… http://www.sportsnetholidays.com/events/netball/netball-world-championships/

Best bets for the 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup

Comments Off 19 October 2010

Can you believe the Emirates Melbourne Cup for 2010 is only 2 weeks away? This year promises to be something special. The 150th running of the biggest race in the country embraces not only the history of the Cup, but also the present, focusing on just what it means to Melbourne and Australia. With over 100,000 expected trackside for Cup Day, it’s no surprise that it’s a tough gig to get a ticket this close to the date.

The only real option, especially if you want to avoid the stampede that has become general admission, is to bite the bullet and aim for multi day tickets. My recommendation would be an Emirates Melbourne Cup and Crown Oaks Day double. Make a real event of it and spend 3 nights in the worlds sporting capital, with 2 days of colour and excitement that only the VRC’s Melbourne Cup Carnival can put together.

If it’s value you’re looking for, the Hill Stand and Lawn Stand are great, but be sure to weigh up the pro’s and con’s before totally dismissing marquees. Yes, they’re dear but when you include lunch and the one or two drinks synonymous with Flemington race days, it might just work out better. And even if it’s on par, you would have to make this your preferred option. Either way, I’ll be there after the Sportsnet 3AW Melbourne Cup Breakfast at Crown Palladium. Cannot wait and I hope to see you there.

Bathurst in pole position for best v8 round

No Comments 18 October 2010

The 2010 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 was one of the most exciting I’ve ever seen. From Coulthard’s unbelievable walk-away roll on lap one, right down to lap 161 with team Vodafone warriors Lowndes/Skaife and Whincup/Owen battling for the chequered flag. Holden completely dominated the podium and with over 180,000 people attending, there’s no doubt in my mind that this remains the flagship round of the V8 Supercar Championship series.

With only 4 rounds remaining it really is a 4 man race with Courtney, Whincup, Lowndes and Frosty fighting for the title of V8 Supercar Champion. Of course anything can happen in the world of V8 Supercars, but with Frosty nailing the Gold Coast in 2009, there’s no reason to think he won’t be up the top of the tree again entering the Grand Finale, the Telstra Sydney 500.  That said, Lowndes and Whincup love the Sandown track and will be looking to emulate their 2009 form there. All I can say is I feel for James Courtney, his bumper is in everyones sights coming down to the wire. Go Holden!
