Ayres to target NRL players

FORMER Geelong and Adelaide coach Gary Ayres says he will target Melbourne Storm players over the pre-season as recruits in the VFL and will question whether they want to be a part of the embattled club after last week’s salary breach upheaval.

Ayres has suggested that it will become a growing trend after former NRL star Karmichael Hunt’s transition to new AFL franchise, the Gold Coast.

“With the success the Melbourne Storm had, it’s going to put a lot of questions out there because of the situation they find themselves in and then the players will think do I have to look at another alternative or am I wanting to give that a go,” Ayres said.

Great expectations should be lessened on Cousins

WHEN Ben Cousins was racking up 28 disposals for the Coburg Tigers in the VFL last week in Frankston, the football world looked upon the much-hyped AFL veteran as if they expected a special performance.

The Richmond midfielder is in the twilight of his career and faced a one week ban that was reportedly because he distributed prescription sleeping tablets to a younger team-mate Luke McGuane who was also banned and played with Coburg last week.

Cousins, a Brownlow Medallist at West Coast, is perhaps past the break-out performances that made him such a big name player in the AFL.

GOLD COAST could help prevent a growing injury list at AFL clubs next season with the introduction of the bye.

The 17th team will introduce a bye into the AFL for the first time since 1996 – before the introduction of the Port Adelaide Power in 1997. This much-needed break for players could perhaps help slow down the season and help prevent many injuries with the introduction of a week off. Many clubs are calling for a  shorter season – or more breaks – given the impact and the current speed of the game has led to many injuries to star players.
